Breeding Project for Kabardian Horses„The Top 60 Kabardians: 10 Stallion and 50 Mares“
Still a lot has to be done. The horses in Adygea are not listed today, numerous horses in the Balkarian part of Kabardino-Balkaria are missing and also horses in other connected regions are waiting to be included. Furthermore goals of breeding work need to be defined. This is the point where we want to make changes. In a meeting with cherkessians from Russia and Germany and deputies from kabardian horse breeding in Germany it was decided to start a joint breeding project. The foal is to support Caucasian breeders by providing a goal and to strengthen the original pure-bred kabardian horse. This is the type of horse requested in Germany and Europe and the reason for the breeds’ popularity. Surely also anglo-kabardians and new experiments also have a right of existence and its place, BUT the main breeding goal should be the typical kabardian horses – like it was the aim in the quality breeding in the last centuries. The name of the breeding project is „10 stallions and 50 mares“: several cherkess experts of kabardian breeding will select 10 stallions from all registered stallion in northern Caucasia. Focus will be to select typical and highest quality kabardian horses and – as well – diversity between the different qualities, types and breeding lines. For each of these 10 stallions 5 matching mares will be selected –from all registered mares. Focus will be again typical and highest quality kabardian mares matching a dedicated stallion. All selections will be done by cherkessian experts and will be thoroughly documented. I will be paid attention that stallions and mares are regionally connectable and that as many owners/breeders as possible can benefit from the project. Only in very important (and documented) cases it will be granted that more than 1 stallion and more than 2 mares of one owner will participate in the program. To support the acceptance of the breeders the program will provide financial benefit. Each stallion and each mare participating in the project will be awarded a sum of approximately one hundred US-dollars. The exact modalities will be defined shortly and it shall be assured that a covering as recommended by the program does really happen and the foals will be presented. This means that most likely a big part of the money will be only spent in the year after the initial selection. The project will be accompanied by a vast number of presentations in TV, radio and local and regional press in Russia, Caucasian and also in Europe, with the goal to promote the event itself as well as the selected kabardian horses and owners. All selected horses will be presented on a webpage with photos and a description, connected with a description of the program and its supporters and sponsors and news about the program. The foremost goal is to provide a guideline to Caucasian breeders, to strengthen the purebred kabardian and to continue the project in the following years – hopefully then more and more financing the program by itself. In the beginning the project will be free for all breeders and will be financed by donations from different European, Russian and cherkessian organizations and private persons. The project leader will be the German organization of friends and sponsors of the kabardian horses ( „Freunde und Förderer des Kabardiner Pferdes e.V.“), until a new international organization will be found.
